Green Fairies

How often do you remember to turn off the lights when you leave home, work,  a classroom or an office?

Well a few of the interns here at the center thought the same thing, but wondered how many faculty and staff actually remembered to turn off the switch  when they were leaving to go home. That's were the Green Fairies come in. The Green Fairies was a mission to see how many of our faculty and staff here on campus that either taught or worked in either the Admission or Ketner building remembered to turn off their lights and other electricity before heading out. Here at Catawba College we are trying our best to reduce the use of energy used on campus and if getting a little reminder here and there will help out we have no problem doing it.

We made two sets of sticky notes, a set for those who remembered and one for those who forgot.

For the faculty or staff member's that remembered to turn off their electricity they received a green stick note stating what's in the picture below.

But for the faculty or staff member's that forgot they received a red sticky note that also stated whats below

Remember next time you leave a classroom or office don't forget to turn off all electronics because you never know when the Green Fairies will be stopping by for a visit!

Teacher Mingle

Colleen Smiley has been working on Symbaloo a website for teachers to make and share lesson plans. On March 11th here at the CENV we held a Teacher Mingle where Colleen introduced the site to other teachers and got their input on what they thought and what improvments needed to be made on Symbaloo to help all teachers have a easier and faster way to access the site.

In this picture are teachers and education students here at Catawba College discussing changes that they feel will  make the the site more easier to access for other teachers who will want to use the site as well.

CENV Interns

Five of us will serve as interns at the Center for the Environment during the spring 2013 semester. We are excited and are looking forward to this semester and the many ideas we will bring to the center. We will be working on numerous projects including the Campaign for Clean Air and other environmental initiatives. To ensure a sustainable future and have a better environment, we want to follow our mission and make sure it is accomplished.

Our mission is: To empower citizens in Rowan and Cabarrus counties to address the air quality issues we face. Our campaign focuses on education about air pollution's impact on our health and economy and actions that reduce air pollution such as the use of alternative fuels and modes of transportation, the preservation of green space and energy conservation.

Meet the Interns

Arsherres Jenkins

My name is Arsherres Jenkins I am a senior with a major in Communications at Catawba College. I am very excited about learning and discovering new things about the environment. I will be working on the blogs, articles and interviews while interning at the CENV.I will also be helping out with other projects if needed. I am excited to see what all the students will be working on and interviewing each intern to see what, where and how their project is going.

Jacob Snyder

Jacob Snyder is a senior at Catawba College with a  major in Environmental Studies. What excites Snyder the most about being an intern at the CENV is “seeing how a non-profit works and working on projects that will enhance the Campaign for Clean Air.” Snyder 's first project will be determining how much CO2 the plants around the center take out of the air. What excites Snyder the most about this project is that he is very interested in decreasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. While working on his first project, he will also be working with sophomore Titus Hunt on another exciting  project called Campus Sustainability. Snyder and Hunt will be checking energy audits around campus to see how much energy we use on a daily basis.

Titus Hunt

Titus Hunt is a sophomore at Catawba College with a major in Biology. What excites Hunt the most about being an intern at the CENV is  learning new things and working on anything that helps Catawba and its community.” The first project Hunt will be working on is Recycle Mania. He is excited about “helping the earth out by increasing the recycling efforts.”He will also work with senior Jacob Snyder  on Campus Sustainability, focusing particularly on energy audits.

Colleen Smiley

Colleen Smiley is currently in Catawba's  evening studies program but will be  transferring to the day program for fall 2013. “Everything about this internship is exciting," she says. What interests Smiley the most about her project is “designing the lesson plans and working with teachers across the state and country to get their input and their plans. The idea of a central location for teachers to access and share information is extremely exciting.” She is currently seeking input from educators and getting permission to publish their names as contributors to the lesson plans. "What I love about this is getting to be a part of something that will not only give our students a wonderful educational opportunity, but let them see that this area is exciting, necessary, and challenging as well as fulfilling, with this we will truly be a global community".She says

India Rattler

India Rattler is a junior at Catawba College with a major in Environmental Studies. She likes the fact that she can be involved in hands-on experiences. The first project Rattler will be working on is helping edit the YouTube video about the Summit. This project is very exciting to Rattler because she enjoys making PowerPoints and being able to put her creative ideas to use editing the summit video.
